Historical notes:

The Diver of Paestum is a famous fresco dating back to 480 B.C., considered a unique masterpiece of ancient Greek painting. It was discovered in 1968 in the necropolis of Paestum, inside a coffin tomb (known as the Tomb of the Diver), and is now displayed at the National Archaeological Museum of Paestum.

The fresco depicts a young man diving into a stream from a structure resembling a diving board. This scene is painted on the lid of the tomb, while the internal side walls feature representations of a symposium, that is, a convivial banquet.

Symbolic meaning of the Diver of Paestum

The meaning of the Diver is profoundly symbolic. The scene is interpreted as the representation of the passage from life to death, with the dive into the water symbolizing the journey of the soul to the afterlife. It is a unique image in Greek funerary painting, as at the time tombs were mainly decorated with mythological scenes or battles.

The Diver of Paestum is the only known example of classical Greek wall painting that has survived to this day, which makes it of immense historical and artistic value. It is also a witness to the cultural influence between the Greek and local populations of Magna Graecia.
