Vesuvius is a symbol of the destructive and generating force of nature. Its harmonious and sensual forms have been reproduced over the centuries in many ways and become famous in the world, also evoking catastrophes and tragedies. Andy Warhol in his works chose attractive and seductive or distressing and frightening subjects: the image of Vesuvius it has all these features. The eruption is a shocking image and an extraordinary event and Warhol, as for other works, has created various versions of Vesuvius in different colors and sizes. This series of works was exhibited in 1985 in a large exhibition dedicated to him by the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples. The images chosen by Warhol for his paintings were the symbols and myths of his time: stars of cinema and music, mug shots of wanted people, Coca-Cola and Campbell's soup, road accidents, the electric chair, the dollar, the gun, the Mona Lisa, the atomic bomb, racial clashes, Mao, the fearsome enemy of capitalism. Andy Warhol represented these subjects using effective, immediate but above all familiar language to all social and cultural strata, the visual language of advertising and mass media, the language of consumerism. As you watch the Coca-Cola commercial on television, you know that the President also drinks Coca-Cola, Liz Taylor drinks Coca-Cola and you can drink it too.
