Descrizione

Michelangelo Buonarroti's Pietà is one of the most famous sculptures in art history and the first great masterpiece of the Renaissance genius. It was created between 1498 and 1499, when Michelangelo was just 24 years old, commissioned by Cardinal Jean de Bilhères-Lagraulas for the Basilica of Saint Peter in the Vatican, where it is still kept today, in the first chapel to the right of the entrance.

The work, carved from a single block of Carrara marble, depicts the Virgin Mary holding the lifeless body of Christ on her knees after the Crucifixion. The composition is famous for the harmony of forms, the sweetness of the faces, and the perfect blend of pain and serenity.
The Pietà is also the only sculpture signed by Michelangelo: his signature is engraved on the band crossing the Virgin's chest ("MICHAELA[N]GELUS BONAROTUS FLORENT[INUS] FACIEBAT").
