The fresco representing the myth of Agave and the tragedy of his son Pentheus' murder was found in the Casa dei Vettii in Pompeii.

Agave was the most famous of the Bacchantes (members of the cult of Dionysus, god of wine) also known as Maenads ("the madmen"), generally depicted naked with a crown of ivy on the head bring with them musical instruments with which they marked their dances during the feasts in honor of Dionysus: the Bacchanals. The culmination of the ceremony coincided with the ritual meal, during which the Maenads, in an attempt to assimilate the god, tore an animal to pieces and devoured it alive.

The myth tells that Agave, in the grip of mystical fury, exchanged his son Pentheus for a wild beast and devoured him.
