Theatrical mask of Comedy and Tragedy reproduction in terracotta.

Reproduction of a 1st century Roman mosaic depicting the masks of tragic theater and comedy from the excavations of Pompeii ed Herculaneum I sec. D.C., Capitoline Museums, Rome.

Le masks theatricals covered the entire face and were often provided with false hair, this to facilitate the interpretation of different characters even by the same actor. In addition to strongly characterizing the character, and showing his expression even from a distance, these also served as a megaphone as they amplified the tone of the voice. The mask that was a must in tragedy does not seem to have been the same in comedy.
