Theatrical mask of Comedy and Tragedy reproduction in terracotta.
Reproduction of a 1st century Roman mosaic depicting the masks of the tragic theater and the comedy from the excavations of Pompei and Herculaneum1st century A.D., Capitoline Museums, Rome.
The masks theatrical they covered the whole face and often were equipped with hairpieces, this to facilitate the interpretation of different characters also by the same actor. In addition to strongly characterizing the character, and showing his expression even from afar, these also served as a megaphone as they amplified the tone of the voice. The mask that was a must in the tragedy does not seem to have been the same in the comedy.
