Emperor Hadrian was very attentive and sensitive to letters and the arts, much more "cultured" than the other Roman emperors. In particular he had a great love for Greek culture and civilization which he manifested in many ways. For example, granting particular privileges to the inhabitants of Athens and significantly enriching it with great architectural works, adopting behaviors typical of Greek culture.

In the "Greek" way, he lived his great love for Antinous, a beautiful young Greek from Bithynia. When Antinous died by drowning in the Nile, Hadrian founded the city of Antinopolis in honor of him and raised Antinous to the rank of divinity.
