Discover the Dirce fresco, a reproduction of the original painting found in the House of the Vettii in Pompeii. This fresco represents the punishment of Dirce by the sons of Antiope, a tragic scene taken from Greek mythology.

"There are few fragments that we have of Euripides' tragedy concerning the story of the punishment of Dirce. This quote is a line from Amphion, one of Antiope's sons, very different from his brother Zetus, a symbol of physical strength and active life. They will be truly united only by the filial love that awakens in the face of the mother's suffering and which triggers the desire to avenge her at all costs, punishing her executioner in the worst way.

The contrast between Antiope, who, as in this case, is not always represented in the images of the myth, and Dirce represented by what will become the theme of fairy tales: the beautiful princess oppressed by a witch or evil stepmother, intoxicated by power and afraid of rival aesthetic. Dirce wanted to completely destroy her antagonist, but the punishment she had chosen will turn against her."
