Historical Curiosities

Caracalla was Roman emperor from 198 to 217 AD. He is remembered for his controversial and often cruel character.

One of his most lasting achievements was the Edict of Caracalla (Constitutio Antoniniana) of 212 AD, by which he granted Roman citizenship to all free men within the Empire, an act which had profound social and economic implications.

Caracalla is also known for having commissioned the famous Baths of Caracalla in Rome, one of the grandest thermal complexes of antiquity, equipped with swimming pools, gyms and libraries, designed to welcome thousands of citizens and offer a place of leisure and well-being. This complex testifies to his ambition and desire to leave a lasting mark on the history of Rome.

However, Caracalla is also remembered for his brutality. It is said thathe killed his brother Geta, with whom he was supposed to share power, and ferociously persecuted his supporters, thus earning himself a reputation as a ruthless emperor. He became a feared and hated character, and his life ended tragically: he was murdered by his own soldiers during a military campaign in the East.
