Historical Curiosities

The Ponte Vecchio is the symbol of Florence, one of the most artistic and characteristic bridges in the city. Built in 1345, it is the only Florentine bridge to survive the Second World War, thanks to a direct order from Hitler which prevented its destruction. Throughout its history, the Ponte Vecchio has always hosted shops and laboratories, first of butchers and subsequently, from the 16th century, of goldsmiths.

Above the bridge there is still the Vasari corridor, built by the architect Giorgio Vasari. He was commissioned by the Medici family to cross the city without danger. In fact, it is said that Duke Cosimo de'Medici lived in the Palazzo Pitti, and that he wanted a covered corridor that connected it to the Palazzo Vecchio
