Historical Curiosities
The enamelled ring takes inspiration from the jewels found in the buried city of Herculaneum, a place rich in Roman history and culture, where luxury and elegance were part of the daily life of the elite.
The discovery of the bodies of over 300 inhabitants allowed an exceptional number of jewels to be recovered. In many cases, they had been worn by matrons or kept in bags and boxes holding the family’s most precious possessions during the frantic moments of flight.
Gold and silver were the precious metals most commonly used in jewellery by the dominant social classes of Roman times. Enamel was also widely used to add colour and vibrancy to precious metals without compromising their quality. The contrast between gold and enamel was particularly appreciated by Roman noblewomen, who regarded enamelled jewellery as a symbol of social status and good taste.
The techniques used to create these jewels required great mastery, and only the most expert craftsmen were able to create complex and refined pieces such as those found in Herculaneum.
