The fresco of the Tomb of the Diver, 480 - 470 BC Paestum, Archaeological Museum.
The image of the diver constitutes the internal decoration of the cover slab of a tomb found near Paestum. Man in the act of diving into a stream probably symbolizes the passage from life to death. The other four interior walls are decorated with banquet scenes. It is one of the most significant and best preserved examples of tomb pictorial decoration, widespread in southern Italy and in Etruria. The compositional scheme consists of figured friezes arranged between two ornamental bands and subjects depicting games, battles, dances, funeral rites, banquets. Paestum was founded by colonists greeks in the seventh century BC; it had a very long period of prosperity even during the Roman Empire. It was abandoned in the 5th century AD.
