Rape of Proserpina. Bronze reproduction of the marble statue of Gian Lorenzo Bernini, present in the Borghese Gallery in Rome.

The sculpture represents the dramatic scene: Pluto kidnapping the young Proserpina to take her to the underworld.

Pluto, the god of the dead, did not live on Mount Olympus, but reigned underground, in the cold and in the dark, alone. In fact, no woman had ever wanted to give up the splendor of light, the warmth of the sun and the beauties of nature to become queen of the Underworld.

One day, Pluto he saw Proserpina while she was gathering flowers in the greenery of her beloved Sicily, and when he saw her he fell in love with her. Knowing, however, that if he had gone to ask Ceres to marry her, both would have refused his proposal, he decided to kidnap her, with the consent of Jupiter.
