Description

Flora (Flora di Stabiae), a Greek nymph, is one of the most important paintings of the Roman Empireburied under the ash and lava of the same eruption of Vesuvius which buried Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD. In ancient Rome she was contemplated as the protector of flowering and wheat and for her rituals it was necessary to participate by wearing colored clothes to imitate the color of the flowers.

The fresco shows her collecting flowers and scattering them with her basket.
