Description

Flora Tile 15 x 15 cm in Botticino marble, reproduction of the fresco conserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.

That of Flora (Flora di Sabiae), Greek nymph, is one of the most important paintings of the Empire Romano, buried under the ash and lava of the same eruption of Vesuvius which he buried Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD.

The Sabines were a population devoted to the Goddess, so much so that they celebrated her with the throwing of broad beans and lupins and represented fertility in particular. In ancient Rome she was contemplated as the protector of flowering and wheat and in her rituals it was necessary to participate in colored dresses to imitate the color of the flowers.

The fresco shows her intent on delicately picking the flowers and scattering them with her basket. This almost seems to float in the air and has now become an allegorical symbol of the excavations.
