Description

Jewel with leonine protomes, inspired by the ancient ones. The lion is a symbol of great life force, courage, pride and royalty. Inspired by jewels found in Pompeii. Similar jewels come from Cuma (inv. 126405 of the Archaeological Museum of Naples) as well as from Teano (one example is also in the kit of another burial). The same type of closure is found in a gold necklace kept in the British Museum, of unknown origin. Copy taken from the original exhibit cat. n° 6432 of the Superintendence of Taranto.

The protome, for the  ancient romans , was an artistic representation which saw the depiction of the front part of an animal (and in some cases also people) as leone , bull and ram which were often used in ornaments and moles jewels . The latter were mainly made of gold, to show their belonging to the highest social classes. Often associated with animals considered amulets or symbolic. The lion featured on this bracelet is a symbol of great life force, courage, pride and royalty.
