Description

This fresco of Dirce is the reproduction of the original painting found in the Casa dei Vettii a Pompeii.

"There are few fragments we have of Euripides' tragedy concerning the story of the punishment of Dirce. This quoted is a joke from Amfione, one of Antiope's sons, very different from his brother Zeto, a symbol of physical strength and active life. They will be truly united only by filial love which awakens in the face of the mother's suffering and which triggers the desire to avenge her at all costs, punishing her executioner in the worst possible way.

The contrast between Antiope, who, as in this case, is not always represented in the images of the myth, and Dirce represented by what will become the theme of the fairy tales: the beautiful princess harassed by a witch or evil stepmother, intoxicated by power and afraid of rival aesthetics. Dirce wanted to completely destroy her antagonist, but the punishment she had chosen will turn against her. "
