Description

Bronze reproduction of Silenus Pompeian.

The spirit of the dance of squeezing of grapes. Our reproduction was made from a cast of the original from a fItalian onderia of the twentieth century.

The statue was found in Pompeii on May 2 1864, has since been in the Archaeological Museum of Naples. The sculpture, which measures 62 cm, depicts a Silenus raising the body of a snake, with the intention of throwing him to the ground. This was to serve as support for a basket, which was held in place by the three acanthus leaves that project upwards. There purpose of sculpture therefore was not only decorative but also practice, qualities often coinciding in Roman bronzework.

The sculpture has one typically archaeological patina and there are represented in great detail the shoes and vine leaves in the hair of the silenus.

In the years following the discovery, the statue became well known becoming a cult object for travelers of the Grand Tour in Italy.

So the Neapolitan foundries began to build copies of the original to satisfy the request of the educated travelers that already in the eighteenth century began to travel around Italy to discover its artistic treasures.
