Description

Narciso, bronze statue with the lost wax technique. Reproduction of the Hellenistic statue found in Pompeii in 1862 kept in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. These bronzes were later reproduced and were part of the collection of Grand Tour, statuettes produced in the 1880s for tourists visiting Europe by mainly Italian and French sculptors.

ll myth of Narcissus exists in many versions, one of which is told by Ovidio in Metamorphosis. In his version, the young man rejects several suitors in love with his beauty, including the nymph Echo whom he dismissed. The young woman, caught up in her displeasure, slowly faded away and only her voice remained of her. The goddess Nemesis, to punish him, let her fall in love with her in her own image when she saw her in a pool of water. Once the young man realized that he could not be reciprocated, he let himself die by turning into the white flower that takes his name from him.

There sculpture it was also taken up by Vincenzo Gemito in 1885 who was inspired by the original work found in what was called La casa di Narciso.
