It is one of the most significant and best preserved examples of tomb painting decoration, widespread in southern Italy and Etruria. The compositional scheme consisting of figured friezes arranged between two ornamental bands and subjects depicting games, battles, dances, funeral rites, banquets.

Paestum was founded by the Greek colonists in the 7th century BC; it had a very long period of prosperity even during the Roman Empire. It was abandoned in the 5th century AD.
