Description

phoThe statue of San Gennaro, photography by Luciano De Crescenzo The Naples of Bellavista.

The statue of San Gennaro on the Maddalena bridge was erected because in the eruption of 1767 whose lava from Vesuvius arrived as far as San Giorgio a Cremano, the exasperated Neapolitans took it right to this bridge. It is said that she managed to stop the lava that stopped right at the saint's feet.

Luciano De Crescenzo's shot embodies the irony of the Neapolitan people, who when the patron saint was replaced by Saint Anthony, turned to Saint Gennaro with the phrase "San Gennà, fottatenn'!"
