Description

The Venus of the Medici is an original sculpture of the late Hellenistic period (end of the 1st century BC). The statue portrays Venus who was suddenly caught in a bath. The goddess seems sweet in her gestures, her soft shapes perfectly portray the canons of beauty of the time in which the sculpture was made.

The dolphin on which the left leg of the goddess is resting and the three cupids help to mythologically place the subject of the sculpture, which can undoubtedly be recognized as Aphrodite. The Greeks associated the name of Aphrodite to the sea foam (afròs), from which they believed she was born; spreading her cult in the West, first in Erice in Sicily and then up to Rome, the goddess was honored with the name of Venus (from venus, venustas = beauty).
