Description

Oplontis Pearl Ring ( Pompeii ). Reproduction in silver from the original find of the 1st century. aC cat. n ° OP 3320 of the Superintendency of Pompeii, kept in the Archaeological Museum of Naples.

Ring found in Oplontis, a suburban area of nearby Pompeii, buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79.

The ancient Romans loved to make contrasts by mixing pure gold with stones and, as evidenced by some archaeological finds, also with pearls which were particularly in demand due to their difficulty of extraction. Legend has it that the emperor Augustus instilled the appreciation of pearls after a meeting with Cleopatra.

Citizens adorned themselves with the most disparate jewels to communicate that they belonged to the wealthiest social classes and gold was perfect for this purpose, as well as having the ability to last for years.

The perfect ring to relive the splendors of ancient Rome
