The fresco depicting the Diver was discovered in 1968 in a tomb in Paestum.

This tomb is a work of funerary art from Magna Graecia of significant historical and artistic value, the only evidence of Greek figurative painting outside vase painting. The walls of the building and the covering slab itself are entirely plastered and decorated with wall painting of a figurative subject, created with the fresco technique. The image of the diver constitutes the internal decoration of the covering slab.

The man in the act of diving into a stream probably represents the metaphor of the passage from life to death.
