Historical Curiosities
The winged phallus was a common symbol in Roman culture, known for its apotropaic power, i.e. the ability to ward off evil and protect those who carried it. In particular, these amulets were very widespread in Pompeii, where they were used to attract good luck and promote fertility.
In addition to being worn in the form of jewelry, such as rings and necklaces, winged phalluses were often depicted on frescoes and engraved on doors and walls of homes, as signs of protection.
The combination of the wings with the phallus also symbolized the power of regeneration and the ability to fly over obstacles, associating the symbol with freedom and rebirth.
