Bring a piece of history into your home with the Bronze Sculpture of Pompeian Silenus. This reproduction, made from a cast of the original from a 20th century Italian foundry, represents an iconic figure of ancient Pompeii.
The original statue was found in Pompeii on 2 May 1864, and since then it has been preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Naples.
The sculpture depicts a Silenus raising the body of a serpent above his head, with the intention of throwing it to the ground. This must have served as a support for a basket, which was held in place by the three acanthus leaves that protrude upwards.
The purpose of the sculpture was therefore not only decorative but also practical, qualities often coinciding in Roman bronze art.
