Historical Curiosities
The protome is a decorative element often used in Greek and Roman sculpture. It represents the head or front part of the body of an animal or a human being. The most common animals were the lion, bull, ram and griffins, used as decorations on vases, weapons, furniture and jewellery. The latter were mainly made of gold, to show belonging to the higher social classes.
