Descrizione

Goddess Fortuna oil lamp, a terracotta reproduction inspired by the ancient 1st-century AD lamp depicting Fortuna, held at the Museo Nazionale Atesino in Este. A working oil lamp.

It represents Fortuna, the winged goddess with the horn of plenty from which she dispenses gifts. The cult of Fortuna, or Tyche, combines destiny and fertility. Her famous sanctuary was at Preneste, present-day Palestrina, where people from across Lazio came to seek answers about the future.

She is often depicted with ears of grain, a crown and, above all, a cornucopia, an emblem of fertility and the goods needed for life. The goddess was considered responsible for the fate of the Romans.
